Ray Black, Jr.
Ray Black, Jr. was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and relocated to Florida at the age of 9. As a child growing up in Florida, Ray Black, Jr. developed an early love for being around the water and spent most of his free time with his dad learning about deep sea diving. It was this love of diving that would later lead Ray Jr. to develop Team Scuba. Ray Jr. got his first taste of racing playing games on PlayStation®. At the age of 14, Ray Jr. decided he wanted to have a serious go at professional racing and began to invest all of his free time in developing his knowledge of the Florida racing circuit and the Florida Late Model racing series.
After researching the industry and numerous visits to the track with his father, they felt the Florida Mini Cup Racing Association (FMCRA) was the best match. Ray Jr. and his dad went to driver and crew chief school, hired a company to custom build a car / chassis and got all the safety equipment needed to compete in the FMCRA Series.
According to Ray Jr., this is where the real racing education began. FMCRA Series competition levels were fierce and the learning became a full time job. Ray Jr. and his dad learned the rules quickly: Lead, follow or get out of the way!
Three races (and a crash) later, Ray Jr. won his first “Heat” race for qualifying. With his dad serving as crew chief and Ray Jr. at the wheel, the newly quailed team went on to win the next race. This race put a young Ray Jr. against all the seasoned drivers in the field and it was at that moment it became apparent to everyone that Ray Jr. had the passion and potential to be competitive in the professional racing circuit.
With talent and determination, Ray Black Jr. took the Florida Mini Cup Racing Association (FMCRA) Junior All Star by storm. At the age of 14, he finished in the top five in every race he competed in and the team secured the Championship for the FMCRA Junior All Star. This made Ray Jr. the 2006 Rookie of the Year. Now, Ray Jr. and Team Scuba continue to develop the team, one that has built a solid reputation and a serious commitment to racing.
Ray Black Jr.’s has been competing ever since In the 2013 season, here are a few of his accomplishments:
- He won the first pole of the 2013 season and the first race of the season at five flags speedway, pro late model.
- Finished 6th in points (unfortunately I missed a two race weekend)
- 7th in the bright house series (also missed a race)
Ray Jr. and Team Scuba would like to thank their sponsors, NASE Worldwide, ScubaLife, and Pit Stop Destinations, and their fans for their continuing support!
